When the Beatrix Association was founded, the board decided to give some extra attention to the education of its members. Inviting external instructors was an important item on the agenda. The goal: to give members and staff extra knowledge by bringing in experts from the field. Just like last season, Gifford Howarth will share his know-how again.
Howarth holds a Master’s degree in percussion performance. He was marimba soloist at many American symphony orchestras and became well-known for his publications on mallet technique for beginning as well as advanced players. In the drumcorps scene Howarth is most famous as front ensemble instructor and arranger of multiple DCA champion The Syracuse Brigadiers and as mallet technician at The Cadets since 2000. At The Cadets, Howarth was responsible for the extremely high front ensemble skill level that nowadays typifies them. Howarth currently teaches at Penn State University in Pennsylvania and is Assistant Professor in Music at Bloomsburg University. Also, he can often be seen as WGI, BOA and DCI judge.
